Our skin is our largest body organ. It contains over 64% of water and needs water to stay hydrated. Did you know that we actually absorb 100 times more chlorine and chemicals in our hot showers than from drinking the same unfiltered tap water? Not only does it affect our skin from the outside, but it affects what is inside our bodies as well.
Every day, you use the water from your tap to take a shower, and you also splash it on your face. Every time you use tap water, the chemicals in water settle on your skin. With time, these chemicals buildup and end up causing damages to your skin.
With average pH levels of 7, chances are your tap water is hurting your skin. At a happy level, your skin’s pH should rest under 5, around 4.7. This means splashing your face with water that’s more alkaline could be ruining your skin.
When we cleanse our skin we assume that we're ridding our skin of impurities, but the truth is that the water we're using may be adding impurities instead of removing them, leading to breakouts, clogged pores, dry skin, irritation and premature aging.
The Different Causes of Acne and Skin-Aging
1. Chemicals / Chlorine & Fluorine
There has been a significant amount of research that has indicated chlorine could potentially be the cause of skin irritation conditions including rosacea inflammation, rashes, chronic acne, severe dry skin, extreme sensitivity. Most water systems are now using chloramines – chemical compounds of chlorine and ammonia – which disinfects our tap longer than chlorine alone but cannot be removed from water without specialized (i.e. expensive) filtration systems designed to filter chloramines.
Fluorine is one of the minerals added to public water to make it safe and promote dental health. However, Fluorine irritates the skin. It can also disrupt the natural production of collagen, which causes aging.
2. Hard Water
Hard water contains high levels of Iron, calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc as well as lead. These minerals disrupt the skin's protective barrier, acting like free radicals that promote the breakdown of collagen and leave our skin more vulnerable. When you wash your face with hard water, the limescale you see on your shower doors is also left on your skin. When that limescale mixes with your skincare products it clogs your pores by increasing sebum production and causes sebum to become hard and waxy which makes hard water cause acne. Hard water is filled with chemicals and heavy metals that are harsh on your skin, also making it harder for beauty products to get completely washed off. Heavy metals can oxidize and create a chain reaction that generates free radicals. These free radicals attack and destroy collagen fibers. The loss of collagen results in the appearance of fine lines, crow’s feet, and deep wrinkles.
3. Pesticides
Depending on your location, the runoff from pesticides used in farming and agriculture can be an issue. These pesticides can be released back into the water system. Though regulations require incremental testing of public water systems to ensure they are meeting safety standards, there are still levels of these pesticides that are legally permitted and deemed as safe levels.
Unfortunately, these pesticides and agents can cause bio-accumulation, which means that prolonged and consistent exposure causes them to build up in our bodies by being absorbed through the skin. These pesticides have been shown to interfere with the endocrine and immune systems (among other health concerns) which are responsible for hormone levels and our bodies natural ability to fight off illness. When our hormone levels are disrupted or altered, we break out. This is why females tend to break out during that time of the month when our hormone levels change.
So what's the Solution?
1. Use a Water Filtration System
When you remove the toxins from the water, skin issues improve. Making a simple change in your skin care routine like adding a water filter to your tap water can improve the health and appearance of your sensitive skin, protecting it from injury and premature aging. Water filtration systems have been said to help serious skin issues such as eczema, psoriasis and even acne. If you’re concerned about aging and breakouts a water filter is the way to go. Save yourself the headache of itchy skin and help your skin feel and look great.
2. Use Bottled Water with lower pH Levels
If you suspect your tap water is stressing out your skin, you may want to try a different washing method like bottled water. Distilled, reverse osmosis water has a pH around 5 so it’s closer to your skin’s pH. You can also use mineral water with lower pH Level. Keep whatever liquid you’re using to wash in the fridge.
If you decide to skip the distilled water step, opt for a non alcohol toner instead. Toners are known to help rebalance your skin’s pH to protect your skin’s moisture barrier.
